Occurnace and incidents

I’m working my way through setting the Occurrences and Incidents .
I would like the Occurrence to have mandatory field of “Severity” to enable users to filter through more pressing issue (like in the Capa module ) anyone can help ?
Option would be to create a list custom filed for the severity differentiation; to make it ‘required’ under the route for that particular step, select the custom fields ‘required for route’. The workflow will have the word ‘required’ next to that custom field and will not move forward unless completed.
